This past weekend a great guy and friend celebrated his 30th birthday. Several activities were planned and ideas thrown around but due to snow; the Alps were, umm closed....??? So he came up with a great Saturday alternative of brunch with cocktails. The email said brunch and games, but we were skeptical about the game situation, so my creative co-pilot and I made some secret arrangements.
A few weekends prior, Kristoffer and I moved into another apartment within our building (which is also in the same building as our birthday boy). It hasn't been completely cleaned or patched up yet so it was the perfect shell to host a surprise game and entertainment portion for the brunch.
After an impressive and may I say, fabulous brunch, it was time to get things shaking and bodies moving. So we called all twenty guests upstairs for an unexpected round of classic birthday party games. Earlier that morning we created our personalized version of Pin The Tail On The Donkey, blew up enough balloons to make your face hurt and stole every one's shoes. Things were about to get interesting and hilarious.
I would just like everyone to take a moment and try to remember the last time you saw a group of adults excited and willing to play the same games they played at their 5th grade birthday party. It was great. We had the perfect amount of people for each team to get even more childish and teamed up, boys against girls.
We started off by clearing the room with what was supposed to have been a balloon popping relay race. Now, the operative word here is RELAY, which somehow managed to get lost in translation. We explained that you were not allowed to pop the balloons with your hands or your feet. There were two chairs in the room, to which you could use to sit on, or the wall, or a friend, whatever. On the count of three, ONE person from each team was to take their balloon and pop it, after which the next person would go...and so on down the line. Like a relay, with two teams, making it a race....yeah. Well, 1, 2, 3, GO turned into POP POP POP POP POP POP (Oh, SHIT THE BOYS ARE GOING TO WIN!) so IMMEDIATELY the entire room is popping and everyone is just sitting there amazed! I guess in Sweden the term relay race means, EVERYONE GO AS FAST AS YOU CAN AT THE SAME TIME! Next.
So we had stolen every one's shoes from outside of the door (that no one commented on walking by wondering where they had gone) and placed them in a big pile in the middle of the room. We scrambled them up and again, boys versus girls, the fastest team to find their shoes, put them on so they were WEARABLE, meaning zipped, tied, laced, buttoned, strapped, whatever, won. Once everyone had them on they were to sit down. The girls took the point because someone's shoes accidently weren't present and there may have been a slacker who failed to tie his up. It was a close call though, but still, we got it! ;)
Finally, and the highlight of the afternoon was our improved version of pin the tail on the donkey. Now, before I can really explain the twist, it is important to note here that the birthday boy has a little habit. He is American, comes from North-Northern New England and has a little relationship with loose tobacco. This was a perfect opportunity for us to play, PUT THE DIP ON THE LIP!!! We created a handsome lumberjack with a nice grin and after getting spun three times, you were to walk *straight* towards him blindfolded with an ink stamp and put it right in his lip. I was really impressed that everyone was willing to have a go and that no ink made it onto the walls! It was a close round but after a tie match, the birthday boy went again bringing home the win for the boys team...well deserved!
So ladies and gentlemen, there you have it! A fun, PG Saturday afternoon with good friends, good food, and good fun. The rest of the evening got slightly more little aggressive, but to be expected I suppose. Thanks for playing, and to our big birthday sport, have a FANTASTIC year! MUAH!!!
